Setting up and customising EQ Zera
Short how-tos for the things people ask about most. Each one assumes EQ Zera is installed; if it is not, start here.
First run
- In EverQuest Legends type
/log on. The game starts writing a plain-text log for the character you are on. It keeps logging across sessions until you turn it off. - Start EQ Zera. It looks for the log folder in the default install location, usually
C:\Users\Public\Daybreak Game Company\Installed Games\EverQuest Legends\Logs. If your game lives elsewhere, point it at the folder in Preferences. - Each log file is one character. Switch characters in the app and it re-reads that character’s log; every view is per character.
- Fight something. The Combat tab fills in with the fight, and the Overview shows your last session.
A new install reads the whole existing log once, so a large log from months of play takes a moment the first time. After that it follows the file live.
Overlays over the game
Overlays are small always-on-top windows: a damage or healing meter for the current fight or the whole zone, a farm meter with kills, XP, drops and coin per hour, buff timers, and the celebration overlay where quest, loot and update cards appear.
- Run the game in windowed or borderless windowed mode. Exclusive fullscreen cannot be overlaid by any program.
- Open Preferences → Overlays and switch on the ones you want.
- Drag an overlay where you want it. Lock it and it becomes click-through, so it never steals a click from the game.
- Quest item pop-ups have their own switch in the same pane, with a filter for quests your classes can take and a choice of how long the same item waits before it pops again.
Sound alerts and rules
An alert plays a sound when something happens in the log: a charm break, a buff fading, a raid target dying, a wished item dropping, or any line you write a rule for.
- Open Alerts. The built-in alerts are listed with their sounds; switch them on or off and pick a sound for each.
- To alert on your own text, add a rule with the phrase the log line contains. Test it by making the line happen in game.
- Sounds come from packs. Alerts → Sound packs… lists the community packs you can install from inside the app. To add your own, drop a folder with your
.wav,.mp3or.oggfiles and a smallmanifest.jsonnaming them into%AppData%\everquest-companion\soundpacks\your-pack\; it shows up in every sound picker. - Any alert, or all of them at once, copies to a short paste-safe string. Paste it in guild chat or Discord; whoever pastes it back in gets a preview before anything is added. Imports only ever add, never overwrite.
Quest tracker
- Open the Quests tab and find the quest. Quest pages come from the EQ Legends wiki, with steps built from its walkthrough.
- Press Track. The quest’s steps become a checklist.
- Play. Looting a required item lights its step, hailing the quest NPC ticks the hail step, and turning in the items ticks the hand-in steps. Turning in every required item completes the quest with a card on the celebration overlay and your quest-complete alert.
- Loot an item any quest needs or hands out and a pop-up names the quest, its giver and start zone, with the step that needs the item lit. Click it to open the quest’s page.
Plane of Sky has its own tracker: every class’s Test quests with have / need chips per item, item stats on hover, and sorting by closest to done.
Loot, upgrades and farming
- Fill in your gear under the Build tab, or let the Gear tab read it. That profile is what upgrades are measured against.
- Open Zone Loot, pick a zone, and see every mob the wiki lists there and what each drops, beside how many you have looted yourself and your drops per hour. Drops that beat what you wear carry an upgrade chip; there is a switch to show upgrades only.
- The Build tab lists where to farm your upgrades, zone by zone, with the mobs that drop them.
- Wish-list an item from its page and you get an alert and a card when it drops for you, and when you enter a zone where it drops. Your own loot only: the log has no line for what other players loot.
- The Crafting tab shows what you can make from what you hold, what you are one ingredient away from, and every recipe with what you are missing.
Updates and versions
EQ Zera checks GitHub shortly after launch and every few hours after that. When a new build is out you get a card on the celebration overlay, a chip in the nav, and a line in Preferences → Updates. Click once to download, again to restart into it. Nothing downloads until you click; a downloaded build is applied the next time you close the app. Every download is verified against the SHA-512 in the release feed.
The What’s new panel lists what changed in each release, including the ones you skipped. Preferences shows the version you are running; quote it in a bug report.
Troubleshooting
Nothing shows up
Check that logging is on (/log on in game, once per character) and that the log folder in Preferences is the one the game writes to. A character that has never logged has no file to read.
Overlays are not visible over the game
The game is in exclusive fullscreen. Switch to borderless windowed in the game’s display options.
Fights end after one second, or timers are wrong
Fixed in 1.17.0: the engine could not learn your time zone on some machines and read every line as hours old. Update, and the performance panel shows which clock the engine is on.
SmartScreen blocks the installer
The build is not code-signed yet. Click More info, then Run anyway. The download is verified against its hash before installing.
The update card never appears
The check runs about 45 seconds after launch and then every four hours. Preferences → Updates has a manual check and shows the current state.
Something else
Send feedback from inside the app with a log slice, or write in.
